精品咖啡的發展在處於南洋的新加坡，相較於台灣、日本、韓國等東北亞國家是相對慢的。本地人習慣味道濃重的南洋咖啡，通常採用羅布斯塔豆，在烘焙過程當中裹上奶及糖，不管怎麼沖煮，說好聽是香氣濃厚、咖啡味十足，說難聽就是烘焙過度的次等咖啡豆的焦味，必須加上高糖高奶（當地人是用奶精或是煉乳！）才能入喉。剛來新加坡時我勇敢地喝了一次咖啡烏 (Kopi-O)，也就是不加任何奶、糖的黑咖啡，媽呀喝下去第一口我簡直要吐了！
